XRG, the international investment arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., is expanding its footprint in the US liquefied natural gas sector by raising its ownership in the massive Rio Grande LNG export facility in Texas.

The company is acquiring an additional 7.6% equity interest in Trains 4 and 5 of the Rio Grande LNG project from an investment vehicle managed by Global Infrastructure Partners, part of BlackRock, according to a statement. The move builds on XRG’s earlier entry into the project, which gave it an indirect 11.7% stake in Phase 1 — covering Trains 1 through 3 — also through GIP.

Each of the newly acquired trains is expected to produce about 6 million tonnes of LNG annually and is backed by long-term offtake contracts with high-credit-quality buyers, providing stable revenue visibility for the project.

Located at the Port of Brownsville in southern Texas, Rio Grande LNG is among the world’s largest export facilities under development and a major economic driver in the region, supporting more than 5,000 construction jobs.

“By growing our presence in U.S. LNG, we are strengthening a resilient, globally scaled gas platform while further deepening the UAE–U.S. energy partnership—supporting energy security, jobs, and investment‑driven growth,” said Mohamed Al Aryani, president of XRG’s International Gas business.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

📌 Why it matters:
The investment strengthens Abu Dhabi’s exposure to the fast-growing US LNG export market, positioning XRG to benefit from rising global demand for gas as countries seek cleaner-burning fuels and energy security.

📌 Bottom line:
By increasing its stake in Rio Grande LNG, XRG is doubling down on long-term US gas exports, securing supply, steady returns and a bigger role in one of the world’s most strategic energy markets.
