Big moves in the smart mobility world: Dubai just launched a pilot Robotaxi service on the Uber app, teaming up with WeRide and Uber.
The initiative positions Dubai as a regional hub for autonomous transport, with WeRide and Uber planning to deploy thousands of self-driving vehicles over the coming years. Currently, WeRide operates around 150 autonomous vehicles in the Middle East, including more than 100 Robotaxis.
With Dubai’s population topping 4 million, ride demand is booming: last year, the city saw 153 million trips across public transport, taxis, and app-based services, and shared mobility use jumped 28% from 2023, the Roads and Transport Authority said in a statement.
“WeRide Robotaxi vehicles booked through the Uber app will be available in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah, two of Dubai’s most prominent areas located near public beaches,” Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of Public Transport Agency at RTA, said in the statement.
