Talgo SA has secured a €1.3 billion contract to manufacture and maintain 20 new high-speed trains for Saudi Arabia, deepening the Spanish railmaker’s footprint in the kingdom.
The trains will operate on the Haramain High Speed Railway, connecting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina with Jeddah, Talgo said. The contract builds on the 35 trains the company supplied in 2018 and brings its order book to a record €6 billion.
Saudi Arabia’s decision to expand the fleet reflects rising passenger demand on one of the kingdom’s most strategically important rail corridors, used heavily by pilgrims and domestic travellers.
