US President Donald Trump is exploring a range of measures against Iran, including precision attacks on security personnel and political leaders, to bolster domestic dissent, Reuters reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.
Two US officials told Reuters that Trump’s aim is to create circumstances that could lead to “regime change” following a recent government crackdown that crushed nationwide protests and resulted in thousands of deaths.
The administration is also reviewing the possibility of a larger-scale strike designed to deliver a lasting blow, potentially targeting Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities or nuclear enrichment facilities, according to the report. But Reuters, citing a source, said Trump has yet to reach a final decision on whether to pursue military action or other approaches.
Trump yesterday asked Iran to make a deal on nuclear weapons or the next US attack would be “far worse.”
“Hopefully Iran will quickly “Come to the Table” and negotiate a fair and equitable deal – NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS – one that is good for all parties. Time is running out, it is truly of the essence!” Trump wrote in a social media post on Wednesday. “As I told Iran once before, MAKE A DEAL! They didn’t, and there was “Operation Midnight Hammer,” a major destruction of Iran. The next attack will be far worse! Don’t make that happen again.”
Trump said “a massive Armada is heading to Iran,” stoking fears of a wider US–Iran confrontation.
